Cengiz Altıntaş Camii

Sacred geometry reimagined — a mosque that honours centuries of Ottoman tradition through a lens of contemporary architectural thinking.

A project uniting traditional mosque architecture with contemporary interpretation.

Project Narrative

01Concept

The design seeks to reconcile the timeless archetype of the Ottoman mosque — dome, minaret, courtyard — with a contemporary structural expression. Rather than mimicry, the approach abstracts these elements into their geometric essence.

02Design Process

Acoustic studies shaped the prayer hall's geometry — the dome's curvature was optimised to distribute the imam's voice evenly across the congregation without electronic amplification, honouring the tradition of the unassisted human voice in worship.

03Execution

The dome employs a thin-shell concrete structure that achieves impressive spans with minimal material. Natural light enters through a continuous clerestory at the dome's base, washing the interior walls with an even luminosity that changes character with the time of day.

04Outcome

Cengiz Altintas Camii proves that sacred architecture can speak in a modern voice without losing its spiritual resonance. Worshippers describe a quality of light and silence that connects them to centuries of prayerful tradition.
