Project Narrative
The clients had bought their first apartment and wanted it to feel grown-up without feeling formal. We borrowed the language of classical mouldings — but kept them at scale, painted them out in warm cream, and used them only where they made the room feel quieter, never grander.
We matched the moulding profiles to the apartment's eight-foot ceilings rather than to a textbook ratio. A flat panel TV wall, framed by the same painted mouldings, was tested at full scale on the wall before the millwork was ordered.
A single warm cream paint runs from the wainscoting through the ceiling — the room reads as one envelope rather than a stack of materials. Solid oak floors and a bubble-pendant chandelier are the only departures from the discipline.
The apartment has the quiet authority of a much older home, but the family hardly notices it — they simply use the rooms. That is the success: classical detail that has stopped trying to be noticed.
